Now I remember why I'm a journalist ...
Feb. 19th, 2005 01:33 amAnd why they're lucky to have me here. :)
At 9:30 tonight, we got word that a very, very, very important retired federal judge had died this afternoon.
In two hours, and with much help from my colleagues, my byline was splashed above the fold of 1A. We told a damn good story, with more to come for Sunday's paper.
This is the most deadline work -- and the most important -- that I've done since last spring. I had forgotten that I had these skills, and that this is the first time in many, many years that they've had an experienced journalist on the obits desk. Without my skills, I wouldn't have been able to handle tonight's work and do it well. I had forgotten that I was capable of this.
And to top it off, my day started with a HUGE compliment from the new publisher, who I ran into as I was rushing (late) to my desk.
Days like today remind me why I haven't quit yet.
